HGV Training Surrey
Our company has been delivering practical HGV training courses in the Surrey area for over 40 years. Since our incorporation back in 1980, tens of thousands of students have passed through our doors (and cabs), and have successfully gained their HGV driving licences.
Many of them are now out on the road enjoying their new career behind the wheel. Many have returned to us to obtain additional professional qualifications, including ADR, HIAB, Driver CPC etc.
We’re very proud to say that our trusted reputation has earned us the UK’s number 1 ranked HGV training company, with over 2,500 5 star reviews.
Just type “EP Training Reviews” into Google and see for yourself! All our HGV instructors are professional, friendly and dedicated in assisting you to obtain your HGV licence.
We provide tuition on all HGV categories, including Category C1 (7.5 tonnes), C1E (7.5 tonnes with trailer), C (rigid, class 2) and C+E (articulated / drawbar). Our vehicle fleet is made up of modern, well equipped and maintained HGVs.
We only provide cat C or C+E on automatic vehicles. Pass in an auto and get a full manual HGV licence. We believe in continually investing in the best training equipment available.
We now boast training locations in Leatherhead, Guildford, Addlestone and Cranleigh. We also promise to match any written ‘like for like’ quote.
The Complete HGV Package
Obtaining an HGV licence is achieved in several steps, beginning with a medical and ending with the receipt of a full HGV licence and/or a Driver CPC card. In between these stages are various modules and examinations to complete, (including Initial Driver CPC where applicable) as well as paperwork and driver training.
This all may sound a little daunting but EP Training are on hand to assist. Our staff can help fill out the paperwork, arrange the medical and provide all the necessary practical and on-line theory training ahead of the exams.
Initial Driver CPC
Students that go on to use their vocational HGV licence for hire and reward purposes will need to obtain a Driver CPC card.
Initial Driver CPC is covered under modules 2 and 4 of the practical HGV course structure and once the initial CPC course element has been passed, students will receive their Driver Qualification Cards (DQCs) which will be valid for five years. Prior to the expiry date of their DQCs, students will either need to enrol on five separate Periodic Driver CPC training courses or a single intensive course in order to have their cards re-issued.
Further details on our Periodic Driver CPC courses can be found on the dedicated website page.
HGV Training Surrey
In addition to training facilities in Great Bookham, Surrey, we also have further amenities in Addlestone, Guildford and Cranleigh and access to a large off-road training area that allows for plenty of opportunity to practice and conduct HGV manoeuvres to perfection. All practical examinations will take place at the testing station in Guildford and tutors will ensure students are given plenty of time out on the local roads and potential test routes.
Pass Protection
In order to obtain all the qualifications you need to get earning as a professional HGV Driver, numerous tests must be passed. In our opinion nearly all stages are relatively straightforward to get through except the driving test.
If your eyesight is good and your blood pressure is in check then the medical is simple.
If sufficient time is spent preparing for your theory tests then the desired result will be achieved at the first attempt.
The Driver CPC (Initial is easy) whereas the 35 hours periodic CPC can’t be failed as it’s an attendance only course, in other words you literally just have to be there.
The tricky part in all this is the driving test. It’s not easy getting that pass the first time. That’s why EP provides a pass protection insurance policy giving you another 2 driving tests should you need them.
HGV Training
From Car to Class 1
New legislation introduced by the government means those looking to gain an HGV licence can go straight from a car licence (cat B) to cat C+E (class 1, artic, drawbar), without the need to pass the cat C (rigid, class 2) driving test first.
Prior to these changes those seeking C+E must first pass the cat C driving test, this was called stage testing. The old rules were introduced in 1997 to harmonise with EU licence standards.
As we have now left the EU the government wants to address the driver shortage and make the HGV licence acquisition process more streamlined and cost effective.
Candidates wishing to pursue this option would still need to undergo a medical, apply for the provisional C+E and pass the required theory tests before taking the C+E driving test.
The new rules will also mean a responsible and qualified person from EP Training (NOT a DVSA examiner) verifying and signing off your reversing, coupling / uncoupling ability.
Therefore, you will NOT have to demonstrate the reverse, coupling uncoupling procedure on the “proper” driving test. The “proper” driving test will be administered by a government appointed DVSA examiner and will last approximately 1 hour.
To pass this test you will be assessed on your ability to drive the vehicle forward only. The minimum 60-minute drive will cover varying road and traffic conditions in and around the Guildford area, this will also include a 10 - 15 minute independent drive.
