AFV (Alternative Fuel Vehicle) Training

EP Training is excited to offer AFV (Alternative Fuel Vehicle) instruction for Cat B licence holders. AFVs, including those powered by hydrogen, electricity, natural gas, and biogas products, are becoming increasingly important as the world moves towards decarbonisation.

Navigating New AFV Regulations

Changes in the Motor Vehicles’ regulations in 2018 now permit Cat B licence holders to legally drive an electric goods vehicle with a MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass) not exceeding 4.2 tonnes, within the UK. However, the driver must have completed 5 hours of mandatory training.

Understanding the Need for AFV Training

The introduction of this 5-hour training is a direct response to the increased weight of electric vehicles, which when combined with batteries, often exceeds 3.5 tonnes, but is less than 4.2 tonnes. Without this adjustment to the regulations, Cat B licence holders would need to undergo C1 driver training, a time and cost-intensive process.

Gearing up for Electric Vehicle Operations

If your company plans to operate electric vehicles, and your drivers only hold a Cat B licence, then this essential training is a requirement. EP Training, one of the few providers offering this service, can deliver this online and at a convenient time for your company.

Training Details

The 5-hour training covers essential aspects of charging, driving, and loading AFVs. Please note that C1, C, and CE licence holders do not need to undergo this training, and there is currently no requirement for Driver CPC.

Certification and Compliance

Upon completion of the training, attendees receive a certificate of attendance, which allows them to drive 4.2-tonne AFVs. No examination is required, and the certificate serves as verification of course attendance and should be readily available for presentation to enforcement agencies if needed.

Ongoing Training Developments

Currently, the training is a one-time requirement. However, the Department for Transport (DfT) is reviewing potential improvements to the training.
